Tail lift won’t go up or down? 5 quick checks to try first
New Win Tec Company Limited 2 min read
A tail lift that suddenly won’t raise or lower — the driver’s first instinct is usually to keep pressing buttons, but often the problem is simple and you can find it yourself in 5 minutes. These 5 checks help you do a quick diagnosis before the technician arrives and decide whether it’s a small problem or a 24-hour rescue call.
Check 1: Power supply and master switch
First confirm the master switch/battery switch is on and the battery has enough voltage (check if the headlights are bright enough). Often the driver switched off the master switch after unloading and forgot to turn it back on — so the tail lift simply has no power.
Check 2: Remote control and control box
A dead remote battery is the most common cause. Replace the batteries and try again; also check for stuck buttons or metal covering the remote. If the control box has an indicator light, check that it’s on.
Check 3: Fuses
Open the fuse box and check whether the tail lift fuses have blown — a blown fuse is broken or blackened in the middle. Replace with a fuse of the same rating and try again; never use a higher rating, or you may burn out the whole circuit.
Check 4: Hydraulic oil level
Open the reservoir cap and check the oil level. Too little oil lets air in, making the lift weak or completely unresponsive. Top up with the specified oil — don’t mix different types.
Check 5: Emergency manual pump
Most tail lifts have a manual emergency pump — pump a few times and see if the platform responds. If the manual pump works, the mechanics and hydraulics are basically fine, and the problem is most likely electrical or the motor, giving a clear direction for repair.
When should you call rescue directly?
- All 5 checks tried and the tail lift still doesn’t respond
- Obvious oil leaks, unusual noise, or a stuck platform
- Burning smell or smoke
In these cases, stop trying to force it and call the 24-hour hotline directly. Our tail lift inspections are always free — the technician inspects for free, quotes clearly, and charges nothing if you don’t proceed.
